Postgraduate funding opportunities

Apart from the fact that it is an old and very beautiful central Cambridge College with a rich intellectual history, a good reason for applying to Christ's College as a postgraduate student is the very generous range of studentships and bursaries for which any new postgraduate student may apply.

Any of these awards may be held in conjunction with awards from other bodies.

They are also available to those who are already postgraduate students at the College and are starting a new course.

The specific awards for which new graduate students can apply are listed below.  In recent years the College has given over £200,000 per annum to graduate students as a result of these awards.

1. Postgraduate studentships and bursaries awarded by Christ's College

Only postgraduates who are accepted for membership by Christ's College are eligble to apply for these awards. The application form will automatically be sent with our College membership letter, and it must be returned by the application deadline to be considered.

1.1 Hamied Postgraduate Studentship

One studentship is awarded each year on the basis of academic excellence alone. All new, full-time postgraduate students are eligible to apply, without restriction of subject or course type. The studentship may be held for the duration of the successful applicant’s course (up to 3 years for a PhD) and will cover the full University fees at the UK students' rate, plus the minimum maintenance figure required by the University of Cambridge, up to a maximum of £25,000 in total per year. Those with overseas fee status will receive the equivalent of the UK tuition fees and maintenance figures. Application deadline: 19 April 2022; notified of outcome by 16 May 2022.

1.2 Warwick Postgraduate Studentship in the Sciences

One studentship is awarded each year on the basis of academic excellence alone, typically worth up to £25,000 per year. All new full-time postgraduate students in science subjects (excluding medicine), technology, engineering or mathematics are eligible to apply, without restriction of course type. The studentship may be held for the duration of the successful applicant’s course (up to 3 years for a PhD) and will cover the full University fees at the UK students' rate, plus the minimum maintenance figure required by the University of Cambridge. Those with overseas fee status will receive the equivalent of the UK tuition fees and maintenance figures. Application deadline: 19 April 2022; notified of outcome by 16 May 2022.

1.3 Spyrou Postgraduate Studentship in Law (LLM only)

One studentship, worth up to £15,000, is awarded each year on the basis of academic excellence alone to a candidate accepted for the LLM course in the Faculty of Law. Application deadline: 29 April 2022; notified of outcome by 16 May 2022.

1.4 Christ’s College Postgraduate Bursaries

Our bursaries are awarded on the basis of financial need, and all new postgraduate students can apply without restriction of subject or course type. Bursaries are worth from £1,000 to £3,000 per year for the duration of a postgraduate's course (up to 3 years for a PhD). Up to 20 new bursaries are awarded each year. Application deadline: 19 April 2022 if also applying for the postgraduate studentships, or 17 June 2022 for bursary only; notified of outcome by 11 July 2022 .

1.5 Sir Satyendra Roy Postgraduate Studentship for the study of Indian and Commonwealth history, economics or relations

One studentship, worth up to £6,000 per year, is awarded each year on the basis of academic excellence to a postgraduate student studying Indian history, Indian economics or Commonwealth history and relations. The studentship may be held for the duration of the successful applicant’s course (up to 3 years for a PhD). Application deadline: 19 April 2022; notified of outcome by 16 May 2022.

1.6 Yusuf Hamied Developing Countries Bursaries

One or more bursaries are awarded each year on the basis of financial need to postgraduate students from developing countries in science subjects (including computer science, engineering, mathematics, medical and veterinary sciences). The bursary is worth £5,000 per year for the duration of a postgraduate's course (up to a 3 years for a PhD). Application deadline: 19 April 2022 if also applying for the postgraduate studentships, or 17 June 2022 for bursary only; notified of outcome by 11 July 2022.

2. Postgraduate studentships awarded jointly by the University of Cambridge and Christ's College

These studentships are awarded in partnership with Faculties and Departments in the University of Cambridge. Postgraduates who apply for University Funding through the Postgraduate Application Portal (by ticking 'I want to be considered for funding') will automatically be considered, providing they submit their application in time for the funding deadline relevant for their course, which can be checked in the Course directory. You do not need to put Christ's College as one of your preference colleges on your application. Successful candidates must become a member of Christ's College in order to take up the studentship, and the University will assist with moving membrship to Christ's College if required.

2.1 Cambridge Master's & Christ's College Studentship (MPhil only)

Three awards are made each year by the Cambridge Trust in partnership with Christ's College, each worth £12,000 for one year. Applicants who have applied for any MPhil course in time for the funding deadline relevant to their course are eligible for consideration. The Cambridge Trust will select the successful candidates and inform them directly. Please read the further details from the Cambridge Trust on how to apply for these scholarships.

2.2 Bindesh P. Shah Studentship in Economics (MPhil only)

One studentship, worth up to £18,000, is awarded each year to support an exceptional candiate accepted for an MPhil course by the Faculty of Economics. The Faculty of Economics will select the succesful candidate in partnership with  College to receive the studentship.

2.3 Robert Owen Bishop Studentship in History (MPhil only)

One studentship is awarded each year to an exceptional candidate accepted for an MPhil course by the Faculty of History to support them at an early stage of their research career. The studentship will cover the full University fees at the UK students' rate, plus the minimum maintenance figure required by the University of Cambridge. Those with overseas fee status will receive the equivalent of the UK tuition fees and maintenance figures. The Faculty of History will select the succesful candidate in partnership with College to receive the studentship.

2.4  Granchester Studentship in Law (PhD only)

One studentship, worth up to £25,000, is awarded each year to support an exceptional UK candidate accepted for a full-time PhD by the Faculty of Law. The studentship will cover the full University fees at the UK student’s rate, plus the minimum maintenance figure required by the University of Cambridge. The University will select the candidate in partnership with College to receive the studentship.

2.5 Richard and Annie Greenhalgh Studentship in Music (PhD only)

One studentship, worth up to £25,000, is awarded to support an outstanding candidate accepted for a full-time PhD by the Faculty of Music with their research topic (in order of preference) opera, or cultural and historical musicology of the nineteenth century.. The studentship will cover the full University fees at the UK student’s rate, plus the minimum maintenance figure required by the University of Cambridge. Those students with overseas fees status will receive only the UK equivalent of the tuition fees and maintenance figures. The Faculty of Music will select the candidate in partnership with College to receive the studentship.

2.6 Judith E. Wilson Studentship at Christ's College and the Faculty of English (MPhil only)

One studentship, worth £24,000, is awarded each year to support an exceptional UK candidate accepted for an MPhil course by the Faculty of English. The studentship will cover the full University fees at the UK student’s rate, plus the minimum maintenance figure required by the University of Cambridge. The Faculty of English will select the candidate in partnership with College to receive the studentship.

2.7 George Kingsley Roth Studentship in Anthropology, Ethnology or History of the South-East Asian or Pacific Basin areas (MPhil only)

One studentship is awarded each year to support an exceptional candidate accepted for the MPhil in Social Anthropology by the Department of Social Anthropology with their research tyopic in the anthropology, ethnology or history of the South-East Asian or Pacific Basin areas. The studentship will cover the full University fees at the UK students' rate, plus the minimum maintenance figure required by the University of Cambridge. Those with overseas fee status will receive the equivalent of the UK tuition fees and maintenance figures. The Department of Social Anthropology will select the succesful candidate in partnership with College to receive the studentship.

2.8 Levy–Plumb Studentship in the Humanities (MPhil  only)

One studentship, worth up to £15,000, is awarded each year to support an exceptional candiate accepted for an MPhil course in a Humanities subject. For this purpose, courses in the following Departments and Faculties of the University of Cambridge are eligible: Anglo-Saxon, Norse & Celtic; Architecture; Archaeology; Asian & Middle Eastern Studies; Classics; Divinity; Education; English; Geography, excluding Physical Geography; History; History of Art; History & Philosophy of Science; Linguistics; Modern & Medieval Languages; Music; Philosophy. The University will nominate candidates and one will be chosen by College to receive the studentship.

2.9 Adelaide Stoll Studentship in the History of Drama

One studentship, worth up to £5,000 per year, is awarded each year to support an exceptional candidate accepted for a course in Faculty of English, including the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic, researching the history of drama in any historical period. The studentship may be held for the duration of the successful applicant’s course (up to 3 years for a PhD). The Faculty of English will select the succesful candidate in partnership with College to receive the studentship.

3. The following awards are available from time to time but are not available for October 2022 entry:
